The BMW M3 is one of the most recognisable, and famous performance vehicles on the road - rising to legendary status in a very small amount of time. There have been five generations of the M3 so far, with each model providing exciting upgrades and technology over the previous model. The M3 really was born out of racing, with a requirement that BMW put their touring car prototype into road production in order for it to qualify for racing. The first dedicated M3 was revealed in 1985 and the differences over a regular BMW 3 series were easy to see - a rear spoiler, flared wheel arches and a deep front splitter showcasing the performance bias of the vehicle. 1988 saw the introduction of the M3 convertible, and revisions took place until the 1992 BMW E36 M3 Coupe was introduced. The E3 was a game changer, it was bigger and more luxurious than the E30. Convertible and coupe models soon followed. The BMW M3 E46 was the next big step - and it was released in the year 2000. This model had a new 3.2 litre straight six engine - the bodywork of this model was also new - with bigger wheel arches, and more aggressive styling, especially in the bonnet which had a raised dome. The next step was the BMW E92 M3 - a new 4.0 litre V8 was introduced in this entirely new body shape - the styling of the M3 remained conservative, but different to the usual versions of the M3 - with the raised dome, sporting accents and three large intakes in the bumper all contributing to a fresh and fantastic looking vehicle. 2014 saw the introduction of the F80 M3 and the new M4 coupe. This version of the M3 also saw the introduction of a turbocharged engine for the first time - and the 0.60 time was reduced to a blisteringly quick 4.1 seconds.
