The Land Rover Discovery is now in its fifth generation - and all generations of the Discovery have been incredibly impressive, with the latest generation of Discovery excelling both on road and off road. The most recent Discovery however, is pretty far away from the original Land Rover Discovery and other ancestors. The first Discovery (Series I) was launched in 1989 and was designed to halt the progress of the Japanese brands who were enjoying success in the UK market with the likes of the Mitsubishi Shogun and the Toyota Land Cruiser. At this time, the Range Rover has also turned from farm transport, into a more luxurious, and more expensive vehicle. The Discovery Series II arrived in 1998 - and it was heavily overhauled compared to the original Series I - there were new engines, and a new cabin - whilst the Discovery still stuck to what made the Series I a success. The Discovery 3 made massive progress over the outgoing Discovery 2 - it features air suspension and a completely new design, and new engines. European customers could choose between a 4.4 litre V8 and the 2.7 litre V6 turbodiesel. The Discovery 4 was released in 2009, and was based on the Discovery 3, but facelifted. New engines and specifications were released, and a new gearbox was introduced to the lineup in 2012. Another Discovery was added to the lineup in 2014, the Discovery Sport - although the Discovery Sport was more of a direct replacement for the Land Rover Freelander. The most recent Discovery is the Discovery 5 - and it’s a vehicle which is crammed full of technology - and is marketed by Land Rover as having ‘capability and technology like no other’ The new Discovery, thanks to an aluminum chassis also weighs in at under 2 tonnes.
