Land Rover Freelander Car Mats | Simply Car Mats General 07-Aug-2020 The Land Rover Freelander was introduced back in 1997, and was added to the range of Land Rovers on the market, to plug an ever growing gap in their lineup - the SUV and crossover. Land Rover was losing sales to Japanese manufacturers, as customers turned to the likes of the Honda CRV and the Toyota RAV4 to provide an off road and on road capable four wheel drive vehicle. The Freelander, although falling short of the off road capabilities of it’s bigger brothers such as the Land Rover Defender and Land Rover Discovery - it still easily outperforms the Japanese SUV’s off road. The Freelander also differs in the way that it’s designed and built - instead of the older ladder chassis designs that Land Rover favoured, the Freelander featured a monocoque chassis which also features a sub-frame which keeps the chassis rigid, and tough enough to survive plenty of off roading. Instead of a low range gearbox, the Freelander features technology such as Hill Descent Control. The technological changes continue, instead of a diff lock - the Freelander features a Viscous Coupling Unit which gives the Freelander all wheel drive ability. This unit works out when the front or rear wheels are spinning, before sending power to the opposite axle. Beam Suspension was also used instead of independent suspension, and although off road ground clearance was lost - this meant that the Freelander provided a much smoother ride and journey on the road. The lower ground clearance is dealt with by extra protection on the underbody of the Freelander, alongside at risk components being moved away from vulnerable areas.Body styles offered on the Freelander included three door and five door options, with part convertible versions also being available. The Freelander 2 was released in 2006 with a new range of engines including a petrol and diesel - with the diesel TD4 engine being the pick of the bunch for most motorists. In normal driving conditions, the front wheels of the Freelander 2 drove the vehicle, and when any slip is detected - power is spent to the rear wheels to get through tricky situations. The first Discovery (Series I) was launched in 1989 and was designed to halt the progress of the Japanese brands who were enjoying success in the UK market with the likes of the Mitsubishi Shogun and the Toyota Land Cruiser. Land Rover Defender Car & Boot Mats | Simply Car Mats General 07-Aug-2020 The Land Rover Defender is huge news at the moment, with the launch of the brand New Defender in 2020. This new version of the Defender is almost eighty years in the making, with the history of the iconic Land Rover Defender beginning back in 1948 with the Land Rover Series I, the design of which was inspired by the Willys Jeep - which Land Rover’s chief designer used to use himself. A new short wheel Land Rover was unveiled at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, which featured permanent four wheel drive, within just a year the Land Rover Series I was being exported to over seventy different countries, proving massively popular. In 1950, over 16,000 Land Rovers were sold - with customers including farmers, the AA, Winston Churchill. The next development in the Land Rover Defender journey was the Series II Land Rover which was unveiled in 1958. The design of this vehicle changed somewhat, with a wider body and barrelled chassis that did a good job of tucking away the otherwise visible chassis of the vehicle. Annual production of the Series II exceeded 30,000 and a new 2.25 litre petrol engine was introduced. Later, the Series IIA was introduced with a new diesel engine, and a few cosmetic changes. It was on the Series IIA where the headlights of the vehicle were moved wider out, giving the famous Land Rover Defender look that we can appreciate today. The Series III was introduced in 1971 with further cosmetic changes. It was in 1983 when the Land Rover Defender was made attractive to a whole new customer base - with the Land Rover 90 (short wheelbase) and the Land Rover 110 (long wheel base) This move drew in more and more private buyers - who were looking at the Defender as a lifestyle vehicle VS just a workhorse. There have been five generations of the M3 so far, with each model providing exciting upgrades and technology over the previous model. The M3 really was born out of racing, with a requirement that BMW put their touring car prototype into road production in order for it to qualify for racing. The first dedicated M3 was revealed in 1985 and the differences over a regular BMW 3 series were easy to see - a rear spoiler, flared wheel arches and a deep front splitter showcasing the performance bias of the vehicle. 1988 saw the introduction of the M3 convertible, and revisions took place until the 1992 BMW E36 M3 Coupe was introduced.
